Hi Denise,

Our YVPP ran very well for 4 years, but the prior Trauma Coordinator took on
a new positon here at our hospital and thus some things got set aside. As
the new Coodinator, we're now rejunenating the program. I can talk to you
about our program if you like. As far as program effectiveness, that is a
tough one because how do you measure a child from 11 years old until they
turn 18. What we have done in the past per my colleagues is send an
evaluation form to the schools and ask the teachers to have the students
complete an evaluation of the program itself - was it a positive experience,
did it provide insight into deterring violence, etc. Of course, the ACS
always asks, but did you prevent violence? How do you know the program
works? Well, the only true way to do that is to follow those students who
attended the program over the next 7 years. Well, we know how that goes and
it takes a full-time Injury Prevention Coordinator to take on that role.
We are trying though. We have great contacts at the schools and the police
department, who both play a part in the YVPP, so we do ask for follow-up
from time to time to evaluate our program and if it indeed deterred
violence. FYI - we primarily only take kids who are already starting to
show any signs of violence - anger - troublemakers, poor grades, tardiness,
etc. We have 4 middle schools in the area and are going to run 4 sessions
with about 15 kids in each group.

Hope that helps.

You are more than welcome to call me if you have any questions.
