Sheila:
On the back page of the package insert, (we use a "rapid transfer blood bag"
from Genzyme with the Pleurevac Sahara), it says that anticoagulant may be
added with a recommended anticoagulant to blood ratio of 1:5 to 1:10. However,
no one seems to know how many units that equates to. Do you use the same brand
system?

Hello, Paul.
I just double-checked with Critical Care & O.R; we don't add heparin to the
autotransfusion bags in conjunction with the Pleurovac. I'd not heard of
that being done, but I did want to check it out.. Anyone else?
:) Sheila (Northridge, CA)

Subject: [traumanurses] Autotransfusion Blood Usage
Does anyone have the dose and reference for the amount of Heparin that
should be added to blood recovered in a 700cc Autotransfusion bag used in
conjunction with a Pleurevac? The company won't comment and none of the
physicians or blood bank have a clue.
Please help.
Thanks,
Paul Woodward, RN
