Does anyone have a clinical standard/guideline/algorithm on suspected aortic
injury in trauma patients that they would be willing to share?  We would
like to place one on our home page.  I did speak briefly with our CT surgeon
who also suggested to look in Maddox's textbook of trauma which outlines 12
steps.  I will look this up and incorporate it but if someone has somewhere
that we could start it would be extremely helpful.  You could either e-mail
it to me or fax it to (253) 968-0974.  Thanks so much.

The publication "Facts about Concussion and Brain Injury" also available
through the CDC website is also a great pt education handout and is also
available in English and Spanish.  You can order them in groups of 100.  I
have the nurse managers of my two primary trauma med/surg units order them
also so that we can keep a supply in stock.

I was recently elected to the STN board as a Director at Large.  One of my
responsibilities is to form a special interest group related to injury
prevention.  Since this will be a new group for STN the sky is the limit in
terms of what we want to do, and what direction we want to go.  There are
already some exciting possiblities brewing on this subject so I am anxious
to get this up and running as quickly as possible.
I would like to hold our first meeting at the STN conference in Las Vegas
in March.  Therefore, if anyone is interested in this topic and planning on
attending the conference please let me know what your availability is.
Also, if you are not attending the conference but are interested in
participating (or if you do not have the time to participate but have some
good ideas or thoughts on this subject) please feel free to email me or
call me.
Thanks for your time and I look forward to working with some of you--

I will be in Las Vegas and am interested in participating as much as possible with the STN so this might be a good start.  I am attempting to solidify an injury prevention institute here and would enjoy networking with you, and others, on what can be accomplished nationally.  I am attending both the TOPIC workshop on Saturday and the STN conference on Sunday, but would entertain a dinner meeting to talk about this opportunity.  Let me know what your thoughts are.

Thanks

Subject:    [traumanurses] Cervical Collars

Would anyone be willing to share a policy for changing from the prehospital
cervical collar to a more "skin-friendly" collar for those patients whose
cervical spine cannot be cleared in the early hours of their care?  Am
interested in what you use for a timeframe, who is allowed to make the
change, who needs to be apprised of the change, etc.  My fax # is
757-395-8009.  My email address is listed below.
Thank you in advance.
