Well, I did a little investigating before I responded back. This is not as
good as it sounded originally but here is some more info. Phillips Medical
Systems has distributed these units. They go for about $500,000 each! Also it
sounds like they are still very cumbersome. They probably will fit into most
decent sized patient rooms but not all. Plus they need to be brought in in a
couple of pieces and the patient still needs to be placed in the machine.
OUr Radiology Director says that they are really just used for Neuro cases and
the quality is not as good as the fixed unit. Also very few places are using
them at all because of all of the problems listed above.
Maybe some day the units will be smaller and more practical.

I'd be interested to hear about the portable CT scanners. It is always such
an ordeal to take a vented CCU pt with a million drips down to the scanner
for repeat CT's.

Subject: [traumanurses] Re: CT scanner in Trauma Room
We are redesigning our ED and the Radiology team has looked at and I
believe, decided to purchase portable CT scanners. One of these will be
located in the ED. Our Radiology department is extremely particular about
the quality of the scans so I trust that these scanners are acceptable for
at least some uses. We have not discussed if and how these will be used in
trauma yet.

We are a level 11 also and we just opened a 53 bed Emergency Dept. Our Cat
scanners are a few feet from the trauma room across a small hallway. One of
the advantages for this set up are you can scan nontrauma patients until a
trauma patient arrives.
Good Luck
