Hi - We do three things. We invite the floor nurses to participate in weekly
grand rounds. We encourage them to come to the ED and observe resuscitations
when possible. And we put on a one-day, home-made trauma course. The first
five hours are traditional topics: assessment, MOI, injuries to specific
systems, etc. The last two hours consist of a lecture on complications of
trauma and case studies specifically geared to floor nursing. A couple of the
cases involve care of patients admitted directly from the ED and a couple are
patients who are transferred to the floor after being cared for in a critical
care unit. All seek information about complications: which should be expected,
how to assess/prevent/treat them. These are very interactive - I just fire
questions at them. John

I am planning nursing in-services specific to trauma for our med/surg and
step down units. I was wondering what you folks do for those floors. Any and
all info will be appreciated!
Thanks, Cindy
