The Society of Trauma Nurses and the American College of Surgeons Committee on
Trauma encourages you to
educate your state's governor about new funding for trauma care system
planning and development. This can easily be done by sending an email
through the Surgery State Legislative Action Center (SSLAC), a Web-based
advocacy tool, at: http://capwiz.com/sslac/issues/alert/?alertid=1662331.
Select your state from the drop-down menu, and you will be taken to a
screen with a letter that is editable should you wish to add your own
personal comments.

The federal government recently appropriated $500 million for fiscal year
2003 for the National Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Program. The
authorizing language for this program, which is administered by the Health
Resources Services Administration, channels a great deal of this money to
state public health departments. These departments are then allowed to
choose from a menu of options for where this funding should be directed,
including the ability for the state to develop and solidify "the trauma and
burn care components of the State EMS Plan."

Again, please access the SSLAC today! Governors need to know about the
availability of this new money for possible trauma care system development
and enhancement. For more information, contact Chris Gallagher at
202-672-1502 or via email at cgallagher@facs.org.
