We just started doing something similar. Our pediatricians and trauma
surgeons are now alerting the social worker of all positive tox screens for
our pediatric population (less than the 18th birthday). For all of these
patients our social worker collaborates with a Licensed Chemical Dependency
Counselor to set up an intervention prior to discharge (or in the trauma
follow-up clinic if they are not admitted to the facility). The physicians
may choose to tell the teenager that they received a positive lab test for
drugs or alcohol and let the teen tell their own parent or the physician
will inform the parent themselves prior to the intervention. Either way,
the parent is informed and an intervention is initiated.
