Cynthia,

We did a presentation last year at one of the highschools in Santa Fe. About 3500 students.

We had the classes rotate through our "course" First they came into the theater and we introduced ourselves - the dui planning council, myself, my registrar, teen court and law enforcement. Then we played the "Friday Night" video from the ENA. (The coroner is especially good)in that video.

Then we divided the theater up into 3 groups. The first group went with law enforcement. We took the big 2" tape and put it out in about 5 spots on the stage. Then law enforcement used the "drunk goggles" and made the kids do the field sobriety test.

Another group went into the hallway and had to do a wheelchair obsticle course - getting into the restroom, going downstairs and getting on / off an elevator.

Another group came with me and I put them in groups of 5. One was a "Victim" and sat on a chair. The other 4 had to hold C-Spine manually and place the victim onto a back board. Then they had to strap the kids on and carry their patient outside to the ambulance.

Then the medics took over and started talking about rescuing kids on scene and putting in all the tubes and lines.
Then the kids went back into the theater and we talked with them about safer ways to do things - seatbelts, designated drivers etc...

We didn't want to preach abstinence here - because that just won't work - it will turn the kids off and they won't get the real message.

You can also go online to www.every15minutes.com and they have the whole mock accident etc... We did that this year and it was a huge success. It just wouldn't make the impact at our large high schools in Santa Fe - so we did a different thing last year.

We had no accidents or alcohol related ED visits for either school for prom and none last year for graduation at Santa Fe either. So pretty decent success. Long term we will be watching.

Subject: [traumanurses] Presentation question

I am putting together a presentation to give to high school seniors a few
days before their prom. The school said "scare them". What has worked for
others? I want this to be on power point. I really want their attention, not
just gore but the message too!!
