Hello.  I forwarded your questions about burst suppression to Mary Kay Bader.  She is a Neuroscience CNS in California who has a great neuro background and who is involved in lots of teaching and many conferences.  Please read on for her response.  Hope it is helpful to all of you who have questions.  I am sure she would not mind further e-mails from those of you who are looking for more details, protocols...  Good luck!

Hi
The use of burst suppression in head injury management is used primarily when employing barbiturate coma. We used to use the continuous EEG but it was costly and too difficult. We currently use the BIS monitor which allows us to titrate the Barbs to a level of 10-20 on the BIS and a suppresion ratio of > 60% (>60% of the last minute, the EEG was suppresed).  Other than that ICP control is done employing a number of different mechanisms. I hope this helps.
Mary Kay
